Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
ASIST is a two-day, interactive workshop designed for members of all caregiving roles—family, friends, and community members—who may be the first to talk with someone at risk of suicide. It also serves as professional development for those in formal helping roles, ensuring they are equipped to provide suicide first-aid.
The training focuses on teaching practical skills to help someone at risk stay safe and seek further help. Participants learn to use a suicide intervention model that includes:
Identifying individuals with suicidal thoughts.
Seeking a shared understanding of reasons for living and dying.
Developing a safety plan based on a review of risk.
Preparing for follow-up and fostering a suicide-safer community network.
Program Objectives
After completing the ASIST workshop, participants will be able to:
Recognize how personal and societal attitudes impact suicide prevention efforts.
Engage in direct conversations with individuals at risk of suicide.
Identify risk alerts and develop effective safety plans.
Apply intervention skills to assist a person at risk.
Access and provide appropriate resources to someone in need, including offering personal support.
Commit to improving suicide prevention resources in their communities.
Understand that suicide prevention extends beyond first-aid and includes life promotion and self-care for caregivers.
Note: The ASIST workshop uses adult learning principles and includes mini-lectures, facilitated discussions, group simulations, and role plays to foster skill development
